| | Retuning the mandolin isn't very common, but there are a number of very interesting possibilities. You might also want to take a look at the table of tenor banjo tunings I have over at Irish Banjo. There may be some tunings listed there that you'd like to try. The list contains 4 alternative tunings. Some of them should work with regular string sets, while others might require special gauges. It's by no means a complete list of course and I'd love to hear of any other great tunings you've come across. Post a message at The message board and I'll pick it up there. | Name | Pitches | Comments | String gauges | Links |
|---|
Standard tuning(s) | | standard | G d a e' | - 013-019-029w-045w (m - 584 mm scale)
| | | Common tuning(s) | | Guitar | d g b e'| Like the three highest strings of a guitar. Banjo players often call this the Chicago tuning. | - 013-017-022w-029w (m - 584 mm scale)
| | | | Hi-lo guitar | d'/d g'/g b/b e'/e'| Same as guitar tuning but with octave strings on the lower courses. | - 013/013-017/017-013/022w-017/029w (m - 584 mm scale)
| | | Fifths tuning(s) | | Alto mandola | c g d' a'| Might be a bit too high for a long scale instrument, but it is occasionaly used. On a short scale instrument it's OK. | - 010-014-024w-032w (m - 584 mm scale)
