Retuning the mandolin isn't very common, but there are a number of very interesting possibilities.

You might also want to take a look at the table of tenor banjo tunings I have over at Irish Banjo. There may be some tunings listed there that you'd like to try.

The list contains 4 alternative tunings. Some of them should work with regular string sets, while others might require special gauges.

It's by no means a complete list of course and I'd love to hear of any other great tunings you've come across. Post a message at The message board and I'll pick it up there.

    Common tuning(s)

Guitard g b e'Like the three highest strings of a guitar. Banjo players often call this the Chicago tuning.
    • 013-017-022w-029w (m - 584 mm scale)
Hi-lo guitard'/d g'/g b/b e'/e'Same as guitar tuning but with octave strings on the lower courses.
      • 013/013-017/017-013/022w-017/029w (m - 584 mm scale)

        Fifths tuning(s)

Alto mandolac g d' a'Might be a bit too high for a long scale instrument, but it is occasionaly used. On a short scale instrument it's OK.
