The mandolinetto or "mandolin-guitar" is a guitar-shaped (or on rare occasions violin-shaped) instrument with 8 strings in pairs tuned and played like a mandolin and with a much softer tone.

Originally the mandolinetta had a mandolin-style tailpiece and bridge, but modern instruments often have a guitar-style bridge softening the sound even more.

Today all mandolinetta instrument manufacturers try to foist their products off as "mandolins," something that has caused the instrument to be frowned upon by mandolin players. This is a pity since, although the mandolinetta makes a very poor mandolin substitute it has it's own soft and sweet tone.
