Technically any mandolin with a flat rather than an arched top could be called a flattop mandolin, but the term is usually not meant to include bowlbacked instruments.

Flattop mandolins evolved from the cittern and has existed at least since the end of the 18th Century. It's often referred to as the "European mandolin," but there have also been some US flattop mandolins.

Popular European flattop mandolins include the French mandolin, the Portuguese mandolin and the Celtic mandolin.
