"Mandolin" means "small mandola" (yes, it is not the other way round) and is really a generic term for all small members of the mandola family.

The original mandolin was a small lute with gut strings, very different from the modern instrument bearing the same name.

The modern mandolin comes in a bewildering variety of shapes, evolved from different historical instruments, but the basics are the same: a small (332-365 mm scale length) instrument with eight metal strings. It's usually tuned GDAE like a violin, but there are many alternative tunings as well.
