| | Some tuning alternatives for the eight-stringed Irish bouzouki and Irish cittern. In addition to the one listed here, you can also try some of the tunings for these instruments: The list contains 5 alternative tunings. Some of them should work with regular string sets, while others might require special gauges. It's by no means a complete list of course and I'd love to hear of any other great tunings you've come across. Post a message at The message board and I'll pick it up there. | Name | Pitches | Comments | String gauges | Links |

| | | Fifths tuning(s) | | Octave mandolin | G d a e'| You can tune an Irish bouzouki like a tenor mandola. You need rather a rather flexible left hand if you want to play it like a tenor mandola though. | | | | | F | F c g d'| One note below the tenor mandola tuning. This is the tuning I prefer myself. With a capo on the second fret you get a good (although perhaps a bit soft-voiced) tenor mandola. Without the capo you get a really full bass sound. | | | | Fifths and fourths tuning(s) | | AD | A d a d''| Lowest string pair one note higher than in standard tuning. | | | | Other instruments tuning(s) | | Mandocello | C G d a| An Irish bouzouki can do the work of a The mandocello. I wouldn't really recommend it, but it works. | | | |
