Some tuning alternatives for the eight-stringed Irish bouzouki and Irish cittern. In addition to the one listed here, you can also try some of the tunings for these instruments:

The list contains 5 alternative tunings. Some of them should work with regular string sets, while others might require special gauges.

It's by no means a complete list of course and I'd love to hear of any other great tunings you've come across. Post a message at The message board and I'll pick it up there.

Standard tuning(s)

StandardG d a d'If there is any standard tuning at all, I suppose this is it.
  • 012-016w-022w-038w (l)
  • 012-016w-024w-042w (lm)
  • 012-016-028w-040w (lm)
  • 013-017w-030w-042w (m)

    Fifths tuning(s)

Octave mandolinG d a e'You can tune an Irish bouzouki like a tenor mandola. You need rather a rather flexible left hand if you want to play it like a tenor mandola though.
FF c g d'One note below the tenor mandola tuning. This is the tuning I prefer myself. With a capo on the second fret you get a good (although perhaps a bit soft-voiced) tenor mandola. Without the capo you get a really full bass sound.

          Fifths and fourths tuning(s)

ADA d a d''Lowest string pair one note higher than in standard tuning.

MandocelloC G d aAn Irish bouzouki can do the work of a The mandocello. I wouldn't really recommend it, but it works.
