During the late baroque, classical and romantic periods mandolas (meaning the instruments lager than the mandolin but smaller than the mandocello) seems to have been mostly used as ensemble instruments.
At the end of the 19th Century (possibly much earlier) the two modern mandola sizes, alto mandola and tenor mandola were well established.
