| | The cittern family is a family of wire-strung stringed instruments dating back to medieval times. It's one of the ancestors to the mando family and many historical and modern citterns show some striking resemblances to various mandos. The Waldzither in particular can be virtually indistinguishable from a flat top mando (except for the extra bass string).
For historical reasons the Irish cittern isn't usually regarded as a part of the cittern family.
